HOE TO TREAT LEATHER GARMENTS
Leather garments have been part of human life since the early days. Leather has always been valued as material in clothing mainly due to its durability and resistance and leather is easy to maintain. Furthermore leather holds wind and still breathes.
EASY NAPPALEATHER
Processing, finishing and colouring of leather as well as producing leather garments has developed tremendously. This is why leather garments have received new look and are more trendy and easy. Best maintenance for a nappa leather garment is to use it, which maintains the leather soft and pliable. Spots can be wiped off from the garment with a moisture cloth or household paper.
VENTILATE
All leather garments like fresh air. Especially air cleaned by rain and still moisture is good for leather garments as well as for human skin. If a leather garment has been soaked, it should be dried like a woollen clothe, on a towel in vertical position in order to avoid stretching out. Leather garments produced out of Friitala’s Water-Free leather tolerates and resists well rain.
PRESERVE WELL
When leather garments are not in use, they should be hanged on a solid hanger in ample space in order to maintain the form. Leather trousers should be hanged from the hem.
SUEDE LIKES MAINTENANCE
Suede does not resist dirt as well as nappa leather. That is why it is good to know some home made tricks to detach smaller spots. One should have a spray and rubber for suede or an eraser. Before using the spray its functionality should be tested. After applying the spray on the leather wipe carefully the leather with a white clothe or household paper. The spray should not detach the colour or leave a ring.
BRUSH THE SUEDE
All garments made out of suede leather like brushing. Every Friitala sude leather garment include a foam plastic piece, when applied on the garment releases electricity and sucks dust and dirt as well as fluff from a new garment. A protective spray repels the suede from dirt, dust and moisture. Especially areas that are in contact with human skin, make-up should be protected. Spots should be detached as soon as possible e.g. with a clothe. Small spots may disappear by themselves. Lipstick can be removed as any grease spots. Double face lamb skin garments can be stored during the summer in a closet with good ventilation on a hanger and should not be in contact with hot sun.
GET RID OF SPOTS
If you by accident get a downpour of mud on your suede garment, the moisture should be removed by a clothe or household paper, the dirt should be brushed off first when the garment is dry in order to avoid the sand disturbing the suede surface. Problematic spots are e.g. paint, blood and ink. They should be removed immediately because when drying they mix in the suede. Do not attach any labels with glue on leather. Acetone and turpentine must never be used in cleaning leather.
CLEANING
When a suede garment needs cleaning, it should be taken to professional laundry shop that understands cleaning of leather. Cleaning of suede is much more complicated than clean of normal textile garment.
